Hi, I’m Amy

A certified book coach
and children’s book editor

Meet Amy Koerner

Everyone deserves to feel seen, in both their writing life and the books they read – to feel like they matter, are understood and have found their place in the world. It took me a long time to find my own place – to work out who I am, what I have to say and how I can make a difference in the world.

Now, as certified book coach, editor and member of the LGBTQ+ community, I help writers of children’s and young adult fiction, especially those creating inclusive and diverse stories, overcome self-doubt so they can write with confidence and pride. I believe that when writers feel supported and empowered, they create books that truly make a difference in the world.

Originally from the UK, today I live in Germany and work with clients from all over the world. I’m proud to say that I am an Author Accelerator certified book coach, having undergone their rigorous Book Coach Certification Programme.

Why do I specialise in kidlit?

As a child, I always had my nose stuck in a book. (It runs in the family: when my parents, my brother and I used to go on holiday, one of our suitcases would be crammed full of books!)

Books were my favourite escape as a kid – a warm and welcoming place where I could explore new worlds, meet unforgettable characters and let my imagination run wild.

Today, as a mum to a wonderful little boy, I see stories through my child’s eyes and it gives me a whole new perspective again. My wife and I have been reading books with him since he was just a few weeks old and have found so much joy in doing so – from watching in awe as he started to turn the pages himself, to sharing stories of two-mum families like ours, to making him giggle with joy when we get to his favourite page of a book (any page with a ball on it!).

Watching his eyes light up when we read together reminds me why stories matter so much. Books are more than just words and pictures on a page. They create moments that shape how children see themselves and the world around them. Stories nurture empathy, curiosity and creativity.

A single story can change a child’s life – and that’s why I’m determined to help as many authors as I can
to craft stories that matter.

Why do I champion diverse, inclusive stories?

I started reading when I was five – but I didn’t read my first LGBTQ+ book until I came out at age twenty-eight.

As a child and young adult, I read widely and voraciously, and yet I don’t remember ever coming across a story about someone exploring their sexuality. A transgender or non-binary main character. A family with two mums or two dads. Nothing.

I had no literary role models, no out and proud LGBTQ+ authors creating a fictional world for me to dive into and find myself in.

Now, I want to help ensure that – whoever they are – every child and teenager sees themselves reflected and celebrated in the books they read. Any child can be the hero of a story. Any child at all – no matter their gender, race or skin colour, what their family looks like, where or how they live, or what their talents, challenges and interests are.

And every young reader deserves to find stories that make them feel seen, valued and inspired.

For that to happen, we need more diverse voices and stories in the world, written by people who feel safe, confident and empowered to share their unique perspectives.

The world might be a bit more inclusive today than when I was growing up, but we’ve still got an incredibly long way to go. And I want to play my part.

Speaking of your book …

As well as a book coaching certification in fiction, I have over a decade of professional writing and editing experience and a lifetime of experience as someone trying to find their voice and place in this world.

This is what I draw on to help you get your story into the hands of young readers.

So get in touch and let’s get your story out.

Let's do this!
