 Questions about book coaching

  • A book coach is a combination of an editor, a project manager and a writing mentor. Back in the day, publishing houses mentored their writers themselves, but that’s not the case anymore.

Today publishing houses expect publication-ready manuscripts and writers. As a book coach I fill this gap by providing you with hands-on editorial feedback, emotional support when the going gets tough and deadlines to keep your writing project on track.

Book coaching is also incredibly helpful if you’re planning to self-publish!

  • When I do a manuscript evaluation, I read your partial or full manuscript and give you feedback in the form of in-line comments and an editorial letter. These are very helpful – but one-off – services aimed at clients who have written a full or partial draft of their manuscript and are looking for one round of feedback on it to help them see what’s working and what isn’t.

Book coaching is a more hands-on approach. It’s suitable for writers with a book idea but no words on the page as well as for those looking to complete or revise their manuscript. We’ll work together for at least three months – enough time to really get you and your writing on track! I’ll support you on a monthly or twice-monthly basis so that you have someone at your side as you embark or continue on your book-writing journey.

  • I specialise in LGBTQ+ children’s and young adult fiction, but also work on LGBTQ+ adult fiction and other types of books on occasion too, if I feel a strong connection to the author/project.

  • I’m afraid not. The publishing industry is a highly competitive and subjective world and success can be neither foreseen nor guaranteed. Instead, I promise to help you write the best book you can and make tangible progress on your journey towards getting your book out into the world.

  • Yes. I start working with new clients at the start of any given month. You’ll submit your pages on a Monday – either on one or two Mondays a month, depending on which package you’ve booked. You’ll get my written feedback a few days later and once you’ve had time to work through it, we’ll jump on a call to talk about it all.

And then we do it all again a few weeks or a month later! This means that you’re constantly receiving feedback and can apply what you’re learning to the next pages you write.

  • I ask you to let me know as soon as you know that you’ll be on holiday so that we can amend the deadlines for that month. For unexpected events such as illness, please get in touch and we’ll discuss how best to proceed.

One of the biggest advantages of ongoing book coaching is the accountability it offers you, so I do generally expect you to commit to the deadlines we set and take them seriously. You’ll thank me in the end, I promise!

  • Per book coaching submission you can send me up to 20 pages, formatted as follows: double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with standard margins (1 inch/2.54 cm) on all sides and each chapter starting on a new page.

  • No, not at all. Book coaching can benefit you at any stage in your writing journey. I can help you develop your story idea, finish or revise your first draft and start querying agents.
